I live in beautiful tourist town of Holmfirth in Yorkshire - best known as the location of hit TV series 'Last of the Summer Wine'! I'm married to Mark and we have 2 children, Callum & Ellis. The local landscape is undoubtedly a source of inspiration to me.
My studio is about 8 miles away on the centre of Huddersfield: Radiant Works. I coordinate the space with colleague & kinetic artist Martin Smith. There are another 4 artists in the open plan environment which is ideal for the cross fertilisation of ideas, to chat & share biscuits!
My interest in textiles was fueled at an early age by both my Grans. Gran Inglis was a furious knitter and Gran Millar made exquisite smocked dresses. The latter helped me to follow a pattern & make my first pair of shorts. I used and old wind up Singer - the kind with the bend wood casing, I've still got it somewhere.
There was no stopping me...my friend and I would but £5 worth of fabric from the Saturday morning market and whiz up new and exciting outfits for our evening out as students...those were the days...
University took me to London & Goldsmiths College. It was a fabulous start to my creative career: Audery Walker, Micheal Brennan-Wood, Sally Freshwater and Alice Kettle were all influential tutors. A few years later I continued my studies at Masters level at UCE, Birmingham
Since then I have juggled a mixture of lecturing, mentoring, family and exhibiting my artwork. Sometimes I sway more in the direction of one rather than the other, but the balance is usually restored before there are any major mishaps.
If you are interested in any aspect of my work please to do get in touch, I'm happy to talk to groups, give workshops, discuss my ideas - I do love talking about my work, it's a vital part of developing ideas. I look forward to hearing from you...
